Defending champions Liverpool exploded out of the blocks in the 1990/91 season, winning their first eight games under Kenny Dalglish, including this thrashing of Alex Ferguson's Man United. The teams had played out a Charity Shield draw a few weeks previously, but at Anfield the champions gave FA Cup holders United a lesson in pass and move football. By half-time a brace from Peter Beardsley and a goal from John Barnes had put the home side 3-0 up and the Geordie number seven concluded matters with his hat-trick goal nine minutes from time.
